Lagos trains teachers on use of online database

The Managing Director, Applied Services Limited, Mr Remi Erogbogbo has said that the Lagos State government education management system has been fully computerized to tackle school attendance, subjects’ attendance, examination records and report cards.

Speaking with journalists during a workshop organised for teachers to familiarize them with handling data of students and school operation online, Erogbogbo said the programme was to launch the upgraded version of the system.

He explained, “Years ago when we started, it was mainly admission and promotion, now we have added to it. It is now fully computerized. The school attendance, subject attendance, all these are now done online, schools can do away with their manual registers and the systems computes all the data and produces the reports automatically.”

Erogbogbo who is the handler of the Lagos State Education Management System disclosed that with this development at the end of each term, report cards, school attendance issues etc, can easily be communicated to parents online by emails or text messages.

He said: “We are giving them free training, this programme is totally free, it is to upgrade them with the new development. This particular session is schools from education district one that have been trained in the past, so they are here to get upgraded.”

Pointing out its importance, he said, it is of high value to schools and also to parents, stressing that a report card might not be found if lost, but with this development, the school can always reproduce it. “It is a permanent life time record. All that is needed in a school for full operations is for it to be internet connected.  Which is possible through your mobile phone data bundle or laptop,” he added.

Speaking on the impact of the training, Mrs Olaleye Olabisi, from Taquar private Schools, Ifako, Agege Lagos said “It is an excellent workshop. The government has tried, bringing teachers from various schools. The school I work in already has something similar to this but I have learnt some things today that we need to update on our own system. It is very nice and interesting. One thing about

It is that it is hands on training, and one thing about hands on training is that you do it the way the instructors are doing it.

“I advise private schools to also adopt it because it reduces the stress on teachers. Currently in the school i teach, we don’t write lesson notes. All we do is online. It will relieve teachers of this stress of constant writing that takes most of our time.

“All teachers must have a personal computer, if you do not have, the school will get it for you and you can pay later. You must have something connected to the internet. It has been very effective. We often communicate with parents, we have their email addresses.”

Another participant, Mr Femi Aborishade of Adegoke High School, expressed mixed feelings thus; “It is a great relief to have the database of students. Manual is better to an extent because of the stress of assessing your files on the computer. However, what I like about the system is getting reports and information to the parents through emails or text messages.
