SS 2 First Term Agricultural Science Lesson Note

Below are the 2022 Complete SS 2 First Term Agricultural Science Lesson Note

Complete SS 2 First Term Agricultural Science Lesson Note

Week 1 & 2 – Types, Composition and Properties of Soil

Overview – Soil is described as the loose upper layer of the Earth that supports the growth of plants. It provides water and nutrients to the plants. It is composed of organic and inorganic materials. There are different types of soil and they all vary in particle size, colour, texture, structure, etc. The types of soil include sandy soil, loamy soil and clay soil. The best soil type for planting is loamy soil. The soil is important because it not only helps plants to grow but it also serves as a surface on which man builds a shelter. For weeks 1 and 2, we shall learn about the soil – its types, composition, properties (physical and chemical) and importance. To learn more, Click here…

Week 3 – Farm Machineries and Implements

Overview – Farm machineries and implements refer to various complex machines and implements such as tractors, planters, ridgers, harvesters, etc. that a farmer uses in carrying out his farming operations. They help make farming less tedious and faster. This week, we shall learn about farm machineries and implements. We shall learn about the factors to be considered before setting up a farmstead, farm surveying and planning of a farmstead, the importance of farm surveying, and maintenance of surveying instruments. Week 4 – Irrigation and Drainage

Overview – Irrigation is the method in which a controlled amount of water is supplied to plants at regular intervals for agricultural purposes. When irrigation is done effectively, the entire growth process from seedbed preparation, germination, root growth, nutrient utilization, plant growth and regrowth, yield and quality will be influenced. Irrigation is supposed to act as a support in cases where rainfall is not reliable. An agricultural drainage system is a system by which water is drained on or in the soil to enhance the agricultural production of crops. There are two types of drainage systems – surface and sub-surface or underground drainage. This week, we shall learn about what irrigation and drainage are about in Agriculture. We shall also learn about the importance of irrigation, factors affecting irrigation, and the advantages and disadvantages of irrigation. To learn more, Click here…

Week 5 & 6 – Environmental Factors

Overview – Environmental factors are non-genetic factors which influence the growth and development of a plant.  They are the components of all factors which influence plant growth and development to the exclusion of the genetic factors. These factors are groups into two – biotic factors (living components of the environment such as soil organisms) and abiotic factors (non-living components of the environment such as climatic factors). This week, we shall learn about the environmental factors that affect agricultural production, crop and animal distribution. To learn more, Click here…

Week 7 & 8 – Plant Nutrients and Nutrient Cycle

Overview – Plant nutrients refer to elements that are essential to the growth of plants. The nutrients are divided into three – macro or primary nutrients, secondary nutrients and micronutrients.  Primary (macro) nutrients are the most frequently required in a crop fertilization program. They include nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The secondary nutrients are elements needed in lesser amounts than the primary nutrients. They are calcium, magnesium, and sulphur. The micronutrients are food elements are used in very small amounts. They are boron, chlorine, cooper, iron, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc. This week, we shall learn about plant nutrients and the nutrient cycle. The nutrient cycle describes a system where there is a movement and an exchange of nutrients from the physical environment into the living organisms and vice versa. We shall learn about the processes involved in the water cycle, carbon cycle and nitrogen cycle. To learn more, Click here…

Week 9 – Factors Influencing Nutrient Availability in the Soil

Overview – Having learnt about plant nutrients in the previous lesson, this week, we shall learn about the factors that influence the availability of nutrients in the soil. There are several factors that influence the availability of nutrients in the soil such as the soil pH, leaching, erosion and so on. We shall also learn about farming practices, the types of farming practices (monocropping, crop rotation, shifting cultivation, etc.), their advantages and disadvantages. This week, we shall learn about the classification of crops. To learn more, Click here…

Week 11 – Revision

Overview – This week, there will be a revision on all the topics covered this term, from the types, composition and properties of soil and the factors influencing nutrient availability in the soil.

Week 12 – Examination

Overview – We shall be examined all we have learned this term.

Week 13 – Examination

Overview – This week, we shall be examined all we have learned this term.
