Week 1 – Waves
Overview – There are mechanical waves and there are electromagnetic waves. Mechanical waves are waves that require a material medium for their propagation while electromagnetic waves are waves that do not require a material medium for propagation. When the waves of the magnetic and electric fields combine and are mutually at right angles to each other, electromagnetic (EM) waves arise. This week, we shall learn about waves – electromagnetic waves and the electromagnetic spectrum which refers to the entire range of electromagnetic waves. Week 2 – Energy and society
Overview – In human society, the term “energy” is synonymous to energy resources. Man uses these energy resources to carry out activities such as heating up homes, power transportation, etc. There are several sources of energy which have been classed into renewable (can be replenished) and non-renewable sources of energy (cannot be replenished). Examples of sources of energy include solar, nuclear, wind, geothermal energy and so on. These energy sources are very beneficial to man but they can also be harmful to man and the environment. This week, we shall learn about energy sources – their uses and impact on the development of a nation. Week 3 – Properties of wave
Overview – All waves have the properties – of reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference. When waves travel to the end of a medium, they do not just stop, rather they show these properties. Diffraction is a property of waves that involves the ability of waves to bend around obstacles in their path or pass through small openings. Interference occurs when two waves occupy the same space at the same time and it brings about the principle of superposition. This week, we shall learn about the properties of waves – diffraction and interference (of light and sound waves). We shall also learn about the polarization of light. Polarization is a phenomenon whereby a wave whose vibrations are only in one plane is polarized. Only transverse waves can undergo polarization. To learn more, Click here…
Week 4 – Gravitational field
Overview – Gravitational field is a region or space around a mass in which the gravitational force of the mass can be felt. The earth exerts a gravitational force that attracts objects to the centre of the earth. This week, we shall learn about the gravitational field. We shall also learn about escape velocity which describes the minimum velocity needed by an object so that it can escape the gravitational influence of an astronomical body permanently. Overview – This week, we shall learn more about the electric field, capacitors, an electronic device for storing charge and capacitance as well as the arrangement of capacitors (series and parallel). To learn more, Click here…
Week 7 – Current electricity
Overview – Current electricity is the steady flow of electrons. A continuous flow of charges is produced from the primary and secondary cell. Primary cells are those from which current is produced as a result of non-reversible chemical changes while secondary cells are cells whose chemical actions can be reversed. Overview – Electromagnetic field is a field representing the joint interaction of electric and magnetic fields.
