In Nigeria and beyond, the name Runtown surely rings loud bells. But besides his versatile music, what else do you know about him? Do you even know his real name, the one that his parents gave him upon birth? Do you know which part of of the country he is from? Really, do you know more about him other than his persona as an artist? Well if you did know more about him prior to this time, then clap for yourself loudly. But just in case you didn’t, then get ready to thank me copiously because I am about to introduce you to the world of Runtown. Let’s do this please…
Runtown’s real name is Douglas Jack Agu and he was born in the year 1989; precisely August 19th. He is from the Coal City Enugu, but grew up in both Lagos and Abuja. Runtown’s father is late, and his mother was a Federal Civil Servant and later on a politician. Although he initially purposed to become a professional basketball player, Runtown had to abandon that dream when he discovered music. And so in the year 2007, he permanently moved to Lagos with Phyno to pursue his musical aspirations head on.
In the beginning of his career, Runtown worked with some other already established artists such as Timaya and J-Martins. He later founded the record label Penthauz in partnership with Phyno. And after the establishment of said label, he released his first two musical efforts “Party Like It’s 1980” and “Activity Pikin” which clearly did little to make him a household name and nevertheless placed him on the next big thing list. His success did come a few years later, especially with the release of his hit song “Gallardo” which topped charts and opened the door for him to sign with a major label.
Today he is one of Nigeria’s biggest musical exports. And it is good to know that he hasn’t just settled on music alone as he is currently enrolled at a New York fashion school where studies Fashion Management.
