Mass Failure in WASSCE: Lagos trains 1,000 teachers in ICT

Lagos State Government, yesterday, said no fewer than 1,000 secondary school teachers in the state were currently undergoing training in the effective use of Information Communication Technology, ICT.

Commissioner for Education, Mrs, Olayinka Oladunjoye, who disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the workshop in Lagos, noted that it was the beginning of a series of capacity building interventions and activities for teachers in the state public secondary schools which the government was putting together.

According to her, “In Lagos State, our thinking is that while it is right to build infrastructure, it is even of greater importance to build the capacity of staff who will deliver services to the teeming populace of our State.

The reasoning behind this is the fact that only competent and committed teachers teach, not bricks and mortar.

Hence, the state government’s decision to continuously invest in the education sector through a variety of interventions like the development of physical infrastructure and development of teaching and administrative staff in state public schools.

“Apart from improving on the physical infrastructure in the state’s public schools, we have invested heavily in capacity building across all strata of the education sector particularly through the Lagos Eko Secondary Education Project by strengthening school administration, enhancing service delivery and improving learning outcomes.”

The commissioner explained that the capacity enhancement programme was coming barely two months after the successful implementation of an induction programme for over 1,700 newly employed probationary teachers into the State Teaching Service stressing that it was a testimony of the government’s commitment to all-round excellence in the State Public Service.
