OAU approves 5 additional degree courses for Adeyemi College of Education

With the approval, Adeyemi College now has 18 programmes being run at degree level.

The Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, has granted approval to one of its affiliate institutions, Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, to run degree courses in five additional programmes.

With the approval, the college which was established in 1964, now has 18 programmes being run at degree level.

The provost of the college, Adeyemi Idowu, announced the approval of the programmes on Monday in Ondo at a news conference to herald the 50th anniversary and 33rd special convocation of the college.

According to him, at the convocation ceremony, which will climax on May 22, a total of 5,147 graduates will receive degree and National Certificate of Education, NCE.

He said that the new approved programmes are Social Studies, Integrated Science, Religious Studies, Mathematics and Guidance and Counselling.

Mr. Idowu, a professor, who said the convocation programme would be low keyed, said that the ongoing strike of workers in colleges of education in the country would affect the turnout of people from other institutions in the country.

Earlier, the Chairman of the college’s Governing Council, Musa John, said the authorities of the institution had been working with other stakeholders to upgrade the school to a full university.

Mr. John said that the school authority was liaising with the National Assembly members, particularly those from Ondo State to ensure success in the effort to upgrade the school.

He said the need to upgrade the college to a university status was one of the major issues discussed when members of the council visited Gov. Olusegun Mimiko at the Government House.

Giving the breakdown of the graduates, John said the convocation would be for the 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 sessions.

John said that during the convocation 3,459 graduates would receive degrees, 1,622 would be awarded NCE and 66 would graduate from the college sandwich programme,

The chairman also disclosed that 10 projects executed from internally generated revenue and from other sources of funding would be commissioned in the course of the ceremony.

He said that some eminent Nigerians who had distinguished themselves in their callings would be awarded college fellowships.
