#PNN E-MENTORING (Taiwo Akinlami): Surprise!!! I KNOW you more than you think – I FEEL YOU

How are you doing today? Sure you are doing great. I am here as I promised last week. Before I begin to discuss the fireworks of value orientation or reorientation, I think I should pour forth the water of familiarization. I am sure you are familiar with the word, ‘familiarization.’ It is getting used to someone, somewhere or something. I want us to get used to each other a bit, before I begin to share with you deep matters of value. I surely hope you do not mind. Or do you? If you do, let me know and I will just stop and begin to go straight to the point from next week.

While I am waiting to hear from you, permit me to set the ball of familiarization rolling. My association which has been on for a while now.  Apart from the fact that I was once like you in age and understand the issues you face daily, I actually began to work with you sixteen years ago. My goal has been to share all of myself with you at every given opportunity, like I have been given right now.

I have learnt from you through relationships and I have spent time learning of you through the careful study of the works of authors and interacting with mentors, who understand you perfectly.

I have shared in your deepest joy and celebrations. I have attended many of your graduation ceremonies and birthday parties. I have spoken at your camp meetings, schools and your campuses. I have laughed with you and wept with you in compassion.  I have laughed at you and you at me too, sharing life and the humour, it is full of.  I have frowned at you. I have had sharp disagreement with you and you with me.

I have shared your anxieties and fears. You have shared with me deep secrets; you did not share with anyone before you met me. You have been part of my moments of honour as I have been part of yours.   My thoughts have been accepted by you in many cases. In some cases you have disagreed with my positions. In those times when you disagree, I cherish your right to form opinions and express them. I celebrate your ability to combine your freedom to disagree with the humility not to disrespect.

In all, we have shared mutual respect. I have not looked down or underrated your pivotal role in the homes, schools, community, the nation and the world at large, knowing without doubt as Abraham Lincoln rightly said that the state of humanity is in your hands. I make bold to say that I feel you. Yes I do.

I therefore understand your issues. Yes I do. I understand your insatiable thirst for adventure. I share in your challenges. I feel your frustration when you feel no one understands you except you.

I think I should end the familiarization talk here. Our space is up. We will continue next week. Do have an INSPIRED week. Stay SMART!
