#PNN E-MENTORING (Taiwo Akinlami): VALUE, What Has it Got to Do With IT? (Two)

Welcome friends, I think I should round up this discussion, which we began last week. Permit me to inform that there are two anchors to our adherence to values. The first is sacrifice and the second is integrity. Sacrifice keeps you working at positive values until they become habits. Integrity, which is also a value, helps you keep your promise to be a person of value first to yourself, to your family and the society.

Integrity is simply a commitment to keep your promise at all times as long as it depends on you.  Does that now mean we will not make mistakes? Yes, you just call it what it is, mistake. That is not who you are. A mistake is not a slap on your integrity. It is a proof of our humanity. I mean a proof that we are humans.  And as long as we are human, we will make mistakes. So we should not be afraid of mistakes. If there is anything to be afraid of, it is for us not to become so weighted down by our mistakes and miss the lessons.

Now, why do we need sacrifice? From my experience, I have found that every one of us loves to embrace new things. That is how human beings are created. We receive new ideas, knowledge, relationships and all with enthusiasm. As we get used to the new things we have received, we lose enthusiasm. Why does this happen? I think I found two reasons.

The first is that a lot of times, we do not take informed decisions. We do not understand what we are getting into and the price to pay and the benefits therein.  So when the demands of the new thing we have chosen come knocking, the initial enthusiasm gives way like pack of cards.

The second is that we live in a world where many things are always fighting for our attention. So particularly as young people, we find it difficult to have sustained focus. A sense of sacrifice helps us to keep enthusiasm alive when we approach any meaningful changes in our lives.

For you to know, understand and live by these things is the beginning of being a person who have embraced values. I am through with this discussion on almighty values. I am signing out. I will be with you next week. Before then, please note that I am available for interaction on this platform. Do have an INSPIRED week. Stay SMART!
