Poly Students May Disrupt National Conference To Protest ASUP Strike

The lingering nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union Of Polytechnics (ASUP) angers both the teaching staff, the students and their parents. One of the ways to draw attention is to stage a joint protest, and the venue of the National Conference in Abuja looks like a proper place.

Hundreds of polytechnic students are set to join ASUP lecturers and the lecturers of colleges of education (COEASU) for mass protests in Abuja on April 29, 2014, Tuesday. The activists, who are fed up with months of closure of their schools, threatened to disrupt the ongoing National Confab.

The spokesperson for National Association of Polytechnic Students, Abdulmajeed Oyeniyi, explained that poly students supported their lecturers because of the fight for their own rights and those of all polytechnics in the country.

Poly students from FCT, Anambra, Adamawa, Kogi and Niger have demonstrated seriousness of their intensions in the morning of April 25, 2014, Friday, when the bus loads of polytechnic students blocked traffic at Federal Secretariat junction in central Abuja to protest their months of stay at home. The protesters also demanded the sack of the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, for being “weak” and “incompetent”.

By next week Wednesday we are stopping the confab in Abuja again,” Oyeniyi declared.

However, since the lecturers announced the new date for the rally, the students may join them one day earlier than previously expected.
