Teen Girl, 13, Sues Lagos Commissioner Over Collapsed School Fence

A 13-year-old girl, Miss Chisom Oparaugo, has dragged Lagos State Commissioner for Education before an Ikeja High Court over alleged injuries she suffered, following collapse of Clegg Girls School fence.

Joined as defendant in the suit is the Executive Chairman, Lagos State Government Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB.

According to the suit, Oparaugo is claiming against the defendants the sum of N857,081, being the cost of her medical bills and expenses incurred during her hospitalisation, due to the injuries suffered from the collapse of the fence on July 17, 2011.

Oparaugo is suing through her father, Mr. Aggrey Ikechukwu Oparaugo.

The claimant is asking for N2.5 million, being the cost of legal fees for the institution of the suit and N250,000,000 as remedies for her present and further life damages.

During yesterday’s proceeding before Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, according to Vanguard report, counsel to the claimant, Mr, Osagie Rubson, informed the court that the matter was for settlement at the Alternative Dispute Resolution, ADR.

Rubson told the court that in line with settlement, sometime June last year, they met with the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN), who agreed to offer N1 million.

The claimant’s counsel (Rubson) noted that since their last meeting with the Permanent Secretary last year, no money had been offered as settlement.

After listening to the claimant’s counsel, Justice Ipaye asked the Chief State Counsel, Mr. Akin George, to follow up on the matter to the Permanent Secretary (Pedro) for amicable settlement and Justice Ipaye adjourned the matter till July 15 for trial.
