A friend of mine once recounted her experience when she first told her parents she was going to become a Professional Teenage Counselor. Her parents were worried because you see, my friend is very gentle, soft-spoken and hardly up for troubles. Teenagers on the other hand generally come with a lot of troubles. So her parents worried about her ability to cope with the job. But my friend was determined to pursue this career and today, she finds her work rewarding. She understood right from start why teens give off the impression of being stressed, unsure of themselves, frustrated and difficult to handle. She understood that teenagers’ drastically-changing bodies and our increasingly-technological society can make for some awkwardness. Consequently, she was prepared to cope with them; today she does that so well.
Indeed, teenagehood is tough although it seldom seems so. As a matter of fact, hardly does anyone want to relieve their teenagehood. I speak from experience you guys; and if you doubt me you can wait until you’re older to realize this. I can willingly recount my childhood experiences and my days in the university. But remembering my teenage years will certainly make for such a sad experience. Why is this? Just consider the following.
- Your face is covered in acne throughout most of your teenage years
- You feel so self-conscious; no thanks to your changing body and acne-disfigured face
- You have a crush on someone who really even cares
- If you are a girl, you commit so many fashion crimes on a daily
- You can have the best day and the worst day—all on the same day
- Society expects perfection from you and you keep disappointing etc.
Teenagehood is a difficult time! It can best be described as the Period of the Angst. And to make it all worse, teenagers have to vary on a spectrum as regards their physical, emotional, and social developments. They drastically differ in terms of their intelligence, physical maturity, confidence, self-esteem, athleticism…all of which can make for some awkwardness. For all these, teenagers need some break in this life. Have some break please!
