Authorities of the Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition, MONEC, have called for entries for the 14th edition of the annual competition expected to commence March 13th to May 12th, 2017, as part of the activities lined up to mark the 72nd Birthday of Dr. Mike Okonkwo, the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM).
The topic for this year’s competition of the 14th Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition is “Made in Nigeria Products: The Vehicle for Sustainable Development”.
The competition is one of Dr. Mike Okonkwo’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities aimed at raising the standard in the educational sector in the country and at the same time sensitize the students by making them analytically minded so as to excel in their world by developing their ability to think through issues.
Over the years the competition has been very successful in reshaping the thought pattern of the students to develop problem-solving skills.
Last year, three females emerged first, second and third, leaving no trophy for the thousands of males who entered for the essay competition.
Thus, a student of Zamani College, Kaduna, Miss. Fadilah Saliu-Ahmed, who maintained the same grade level in the first and second phases of the competition, scored 75 per cent to clinch the first position in the competition that received 846 entries.
While the second position went to Miss Barakat Adebayo of Roshallom International School Egbeda, Lagos, Miss Wuraola Adeoye of Fountain Height Secondary School, Lagos finished third.
Like previous years, the star winner school gets three sets of desktop computers and a printer, while the student goes home with a trophy, Laptop, N100,000.00 cash and a plaque. The first runner up school gets two sets of desktop computers and a printer and the student goes home with a cash prize of N75,000.00 with a plaque. The second runner up school gets a desktop computer, while the student gets N50,000.00 cash prize and a plaque.
