Textbooks to be Translated into Local Dialect in Benue State

If the news making the rounds is anything to go by, then something good is about to happen in the education system. This is because the Benue State Government [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][Middle Belt Region of Nigeria] is set to translate science textbooks into Tiv which is the most dominant local dialect in the state. According to Lindaikejisblog.com, the Chairman of the state’s Universal Education Board [Philip Tachin] made the disclosure, while hinting that the Government is also considering ways of translating the textbooks into most of the other major languages in the state; namely Idoma and Igede.

This was made known yesterday when the Benue State UBE Executive Chairman was declaring open the ongoing Teacher Professional Development Workshop in the state which is tagged “Strengthening Mathematics Science Education” . The two-week long event is taking place in the state capital and it has stakeholders in the Benue State Education Sector in attendance.

We think this is a great idea, although we cannot help but imagine the actual possibility of it coming to fruition. This doubt [however] is only because the sciences are very tricky with their special vocabularies, and most of our indigenous languages do not have  enough words to translate regular English language much more science registers. But then again, never say never! We will definitely be on the lookout to see how this works out. In the meantime, it is a fantastic idea!

Well done, Benue State!
