The Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) has emphasised the need for students to cultivate good reading culture to enable them to become outstanding in the society. The chairperson of SWAN, Abuja chapter, Mrs Katchy Patience, stated this during a career talk and quiz competition organised for 15 schools in the Federal Capital Territory, yesterday.
She said- “The purpose of this competition is to inculcate knowledge in the students and to promote the accounting profession. We have good private and public schools competing with themselves. We want to create the reading culture amongst them and to know that before you become anything in life, you have to read. They have to read and understand.”
The chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Candido, who was represented by the supervisory councillor, Finance and Accounts, Salamatu Bello Jibrin, said such programmes would help the students test their intellect, knowledge and instil more confidence in them.
She advised the students to read more rather than devote time to playing electronic games, adding that they should study mathematics because it is the major subject required for accountancy.
The Head of Accounting Department at the University of Abuja who gave the career talk at the event, Dr Taibat Atiyebi, said most students didn’t know what subject combination they needed for a particular course, adding that that was as a result of lack of information.
One of the students from Anglican Girls Grammer School, Apo, Miss Alao Ifedapo, said the programme has helped her to know what career to choose.
The chairperson of the Career Talk, Ajide Fausat Fadekemi, said 15 schools participated in the quiz competition with Regina Pacis College, Abuja clinching the first position, Government Secondary School, Wuse Zone 3, coming second and Government Secondary School, Mabushi, third.
