A few Saturdays ago I was at home with my younger ones, watching a TV programme where the anchor compared Sheyi Shay’s and Yemi Alade’s dress senses and general beauty standards. It was an interesting show I must say, and by the end of it the anchor concluded that Sheyi Shay was more beautiful by every standard. Meanwhile, my young folks instantly disagreed, and then they disagreed even more when I agreed with the anchor. What happened next was a long time spent arguing over the topic until I became bored and slept off.
But then later on, I gave the issue some more thought but from a different dimension. I thought to myself- between Yemi Alade and Sheyi Shay, who is really more appealing to teenagers? I mean, that’s a question to ask, right? Since my younger ones (who are teenagers by the way) felt that Yemi Alade was more interesting to them, then there is a chance that many more teens think the same way. Now I understand that my younger ones’ opinions do not represent the general opinion of most Nigerian teens, yet their assertions made some sense. So let is look at some of them, after which you will tell me (in the comment section) who you would rather prefer between Sheyi and Yemi.
Yemi Alade is more popular and therefore more relatable. They hear her songs more on the radio and watch her music videos all the time on TV. Therefore, they are just more addicted to her than they are to Sheyi Shay.
Yemi Alade’s songs are a lot more fun and upbeat? This is another opinion expressed by my younger ones as reason for choosing Yemi over Sheyi. They said people love Yemi because they can easily relate to her songs, dance to them and be entertained by them. Moreover, many teens can easily mention Yemi’s songs such as “Johny”, “Ferrari” and “Tumbom Tumbom”. But they cannot very easily remember Sheyi’s songs; even “Murda”?
Yemi’s beauty natural and Sheyi’s isn’t? Once again, this is not my opinion. My younger ones really argued that Sheyi Shay tries so hard to be beautiful and sexy whereas Yemi Alade doesn’t bother with that; and that is another reason my teenage girls like her. Take for instance, my people argued that whereas Sheyi uses uses lots of makeup, Yemi does not. Well let me just state here categorically that I disagree with this assertion because we all know that both women are beautiful and that Yemi Alade loves to paint her face just as much…
Sheyi Shay is too skinny and always “forming Londoner”, whereas Yemi Alade has the right “fats” in the right places and isn’t scared to show it. Hmmmmmm! Well let’s be clear about this- there is nothing wrong with being skinny. Come to think of it, it is even healthy for the self. And there is nothing wrong with having a couple of extra pounds here and there; African girls should be curvaceous for goodness sake. Also, Sheyi Shay doesn’t necessary “form” Londoner; she lived there and so it is just a part of who she is. And what else can I say…whatever!
Both Sheyi Shay and Yemi Alade are both beautiful, incredibly talented and lovely young Nigerian women. I am so proud to call them both my celebrities. But then I also understand that everyone has a taste. If Yemi Alade appeals more to teens then it’s fine. But then we are not even sure whether or not this is actually the case. And that is why I will need you all to comment and tell me who you’d rather prefer between the two incredibly Nigerian stars.
