YES I CAN – A Student’s Guide to Academic Success – 3, by Omozino Eguh

The excerpt of the book YES I CAN continues today. Last week, we did an excerpt from Chapter 2. Today, PassNowNow is giving its readers an excerption from Chapter 3. The author, in this chapter provides her shoulder (by narrating a practical story) for you to stand on as she reveals what you need to make your academic pursuit fruitful. This excerpt shares a part where the author gives an antidote to the laziness syndrome.

Chapter 3:  Heading For Your Destination

The Antidote pg 20
You may wonder if there is a cure for this syndrome, there is definitely a cure. The cure to this syndrome is setting your priorities straight; which involves putting in order of importance the things that matter most to you. It is important to set priorities because as human beings we are easily distracted. I have observed and experienced that at the beginning of a new session or term we set our priorities and focus on them. Everything begins to work out well but the moment we lose sight of our priorities, everything starts falling apart. To buttress this point I will share my own experience on how I overcame this syndrome.

In my second year at the university, the second semester precisely, I returned back to school with a fresh zeal to do the right things to get my result back on track as I had dropped by 3 points the previous semester. When lectures began, I took it upon myself to study what I had been taught for each day’s lecture for about an hour. I did this consistently and it was indeed of great help in the sense that I was able to write and pass with ease impromptu tests that were given.

I must say that there were times when I watched movies a lot because I was tired of reading so my newest form of relaxation (which was a lame excuse) was to be stuck on movies and television series. The rate at which I was going in my new found habit I knew I was headed for failure and I needed to stop. I did a lot of pep talks to myself reminding myself of what I wanted and where I was headed (setting my priorities). It was not easy but I did this over and over until I was back on track to my study plan and at the end of the semester all my effort was crowned with a first class result.
