Meaning of UDHR

The Universal Declaration of Human Right reflects the fundamental beliefs shared by countries around the world regarding human rights.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a declaration adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948 at the Palais de Chaillot, Paris.

Historical background of UDHR

The UDHR was adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Dec 1948 as a result of the experience of the Second World War, the end of the war bring about the creation of United Nations, the international community vowed never again to allow atrocities like those of that conflict happens again.

The commission on human right was made up of 18 members from various political, cultural and religious backgrounds.It was chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, widow of American President Franklin D. Roosevelt, with her were Rene Cassin of France, who composed the first draft of the declaration, the committee Rapporteur Charles Malik of Lebanon, vice -chairman Peng Chung  change of China and John of Humphrey of Canada, director of the UN’s Human Right Division, who prepared  the declaration’s blueprint. But Mrs. Roosevelt was recognized as the driving force for the declaration’s adoption.

The Seven Core Freedom of the UDHR

  1. Right to life, liberty and security of the person: This states that every one has the right to be free from unlawful or arbitrary arrest detention or deprivation of his or her liberty. Everyone is entitled to protection against violence, physical injury or intimidation by anybody or government official.
  2. Right to non discrimination, equality before the law and equal protection by the law: No one should be subjected  to discrimination by reason of his place of origin, sex, religion or political opinion which others are not subjected. Everyone should enjoy all economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights on an equal basis.
  3. Right to freedom of movement and to choose residence: This is to say that everyone has the right to come and go as he or she wishes  within his or her country. This right is subject to very few limitations.
  4. Right to freedom of opinion and expression: Everyone should be free to express his opinion on governmental issues and other issues in the society. There should be freedom for everyone to speak his mind provided it is done in full respect of other people’s right.
  5. Right to peaceful assembly and freedom of association: Every individual is free to associate with the person of like mind, ideas or philosophy without restrictions, this freedom is however curtailed by the laws of different jurisdiction  on permit and acceptable association.
  6. Right to freedom of thought, conscience or religion: Everyone has the right to practice his or her religion freely, to change it  and to practice it either individually or with other people.There is freedom to think and belief in any idea or philosophy or religion without fear of sanction.
