4 Secrets To Staying Awake In Class

Does it always seem like you need pegs to keep your eyelids from closing in class? It becomes even worse if the topic is boring to you, or just seems to float above the top of your head? Could the problem be that you did not have a full night’s rest? Or you are just plain uninterested in what is going on in class? Let’s consider some vital points.

1. Get Sufficient Sleep

Insufficient sleep has been linked to a number of health issues, such as depression, obesity, and lower levels of academic achievement. Since school starts between 7:45 and 8:00am across Nigeria, this may make it hard for many teens to get enough sleep – some of whom may have a hard time falling asleep naturally before 11 p.m. It becomes imperative to develop healthy sleep habits.

2. Develop Healthy Sleep Habits
  • They include things like avoiding drinking coffee and cola drinks (which contain caffeine) later in the afternoon or evening.
  • Shutting off electronics preferably an hour before bedtime and avoiding vigorous exercise too close to bedtime.
  • Disciplining yourself not to use electronic devices in the bedroom and in bed (even when your friend wants to give you the latest gist about Chidera or Victor Osimhen). You should also put a limit on the number of extracurricular activities you participate in, as these may get you over-worked and zapped of energy.

3. Nutrition and Exercise

Ensure to eat well, and exercise regularly. This does not necessarily mean joining a gym, it could be something as simple as walking, riding a bicycle, or simply playing your favourite sport – the perfect way to exercise and have some fun too!

4. Maintain a Sleep Pattern

You shouldn’t sleep in on weekends – perhaps until noon – because doing that over time messes with your circadian rhythm (which regulates your sleeping and waking time), and hinders your ability to get to bed at a reasonable hour when you eventually want to. Ensure to sleep for between 8 and 9.5 hours, it has been found to be sufficient enough.

Wishing you a fun weekend, and enough energy to take on the coming school week (trust me, I know it can be tasking)
