As far as beauty topics are concerned, hair removal is by far one of the least glamorous processes to talk about.
Even if you have been getting rid of your body hair for ages, the tedious process (the cuts, razor burn, and redness that come with it) hasn’t been very bearable. The pros have all the secrets on making the process a more comfortable experience, and even though there is a common saying that beauty is pain, that doesn’t have to be. Not with these tips.
1. Exfoliate your skin
Removing dead skin cells is also beneficial before your shave because it keeps the razor from dulling quicker and helps you get as close to the root as possible
2. Wait a few minutes in the shower
Standing in a hot shower for a few minutes opens up the hair follicle and softens them for an easier shave. Or use a warm towel to steam the area before you shave.
3. Use a soothing shaving cream
One with natural vegetable oils and butters like ambrosia, will soften your hair and prevent ingrowth and razor burn. If you have sensitive skin, scented products like aftershave can irritate it. Instead, rinse with cool water or put a cool washcloth on your face after shaving to help soothe the skin.
4. Save your ankles and knees for last
It gives your shaving cream (if you use any) more time to soak into these tricky areas and the more moisture they get, the less chance you will nick them.
5. Replace your disposable razors
Many people don’t replace their blades often enough and that’s essential to a nick-free shave. If you use a dispensable razor, toss them more often than you think and replace cartridges about about every two weeks to a month if you are using them daily.
6. Use a soothing moisturizer
Calm any redness and irritation with a cooling and comforting moisturizer.
7. Employ the right shaving technique
- Make short, light razor strokes in the same direction as your hair grows.
- Try not to go over the same area more than once.
- While shaving, rinse the blade after every few strokes so gel and hair don’t build up.
- When using a new razor, try not to push down as hard as you did with your old one — a sharp razor doesn’t need as much pressure to get a clean shave.
- Leave yourself plenty of time to shave so you can be careful and not rush through it.
8. Be careful with how frequent you shave
Some guys don’t need to shave every day. Shaving when there’s not enough hair growth can irritate the skin. Before your bath, look in the mirror. If you don’t see much hair growth, you can give your razor the day off.
