The 2015 Art Competition for Nigerian Secondary Schools rounded off recently in Lagos with six contestants emerging tops. Sponsored by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Chevron Nigerian Ltd. The award and exhibition ceremony which took place at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, saw the six top finalists winning various amounts of prize money in the competition for both junior and senior school category.
Chevron’s Managing Director who was represented by Mr. Tunji Idowu noted that 600 entries were received from about 400 schools, adding that 20 made it to the final. He said it was the intention of Chevron to continue encouraging the schools’ continued participation in the competition.The first, second and third place winners of the junior and senior categories got NNPC/Chevron sponsorship throughout their secondary school education, and they will enjoy financial support of N100,000, N75,000 and N65,000 respectively every year throughout their secondary school education.
In his welcome address, described this year’s entries as very imaginative and beautiful even as he expressed the company’s hope that the programme would assist some of the participants in the future, and help to solve the challenge of remaining creative as they grow older.
Chevron, though an oil and gas company, sponsors the Arts because it is in line with the company’s social investment programmes which are aimed at contributing to the development of education, health, socials, and the economy. He further added that Chevron holds diversity as one of her core values.
Diversity is not just a buzz word for us, we value and encourage diversity of thoughts and perspectives.
Thus, by partnering with the Federal Ministry of Education to sponsor the National Art Competition, we are keeping faith with the company’s values of partnership and respect for culture and diversity. Also, the aim of the sponsorship is to give participants the opportunity to express their multiple perspectives of the environment seeing that there are many ways to see and interpret the world, and hone their skills in the process.
