Origin
Some say it was the Egyptians, others say the Romans, yet others insist it was the Greeks? While no one can be quite certain, what most agree on is that African American hip-hop artistes were the ones who made it popular. From back in the 1980s with famous rapper, MC Hammer, and Will Smith in Fresh prince of Bel-air. Both of them wore small loop silver earrings back then.
Then, in the early 2000s, David Beckham made it world famous and ubercool when he started wearing earrings in fashion photo shoots. That was what started a whole new fashion statement for men wearing earrings, particularly big diamond earrings. Though, the African Americans who started the trend are still going strong with it, and you would especially find most sports star and hip-hop entertainers wearing different types of earrings today.
Why Is Everyone Crazy About It?
Below are some reasons to consider:
1. Fashion Statement
As mentioned earlier, it has become an accessory just like a watch to match an outfit for men. Moreover, majority of Nigerian celebrities are spotted wearing earrings.
2. Personality & Style
Remember what you wear show a lot about your character, personality and style. By wearing all these accessories, these people hope to show to the rest of the world just the type of person they are – perhaps that they have a love for high taste, non-conformism (that is not caring much about society’s standard of what it thinks is good for them), and showmanship.
3. Religion
Someone once spoke of his Sikh camp mate (a religious group with origin in India), who not only wore turban, steel bracelet on his right wrist but also an additional white gold earring on his left ear. When asked why he was dressed up so traditionally, and with an earring, he replied that the earring was given to him by his mum at a young age and has been wearing it since he was 13 years old. The Sikhs believe that it can ward off evil.
Though he couldn’t confirm how true this is, since he didn’t have any Sikh friends. But taking the man’s words for what they are will make religion another possible reason why men wear earrings.
