Understanding Sexual Arousal
When someone is really turned on or horny it is called ‘arousal’. Sexual arousal is a state of heightened physiological activity. A state of sexual readiness which has a mental component—increased cortical responsiveness to sensory stimulation—and physical component—increased penile sensitivity, neural response to stimuli, and sense of impending orgasm.
Sexual arousal is increased blood flow to the genital area causing the clitoris to swell and harden in women and the penis to become erect and hard in men. During arousal, the heart beats faster, blood pressure increases, and breathing becomes more rapid.
Sexual arousal is a sudden desire to have sex, you feel all shaky and you want to cling really hard to someone or something. Believe these feelings happen and they are natural. If you experience them, you don’t have to be scared but you just need to understand why it happens. Know this, Sometimes people feel aroused but it doesn’t necessarily mean they want to have sex.

Why Do I Get Sexually Aroused
1. Sexual arousal usually begins in the brain. This happens when
- Your brain responds to a sexy thought or image you have seen
- You have a feeling of closeness or affection towards a partner or someone you have a crush on
- Your boyfriend or crush touches you there by sending signals to the rest of your body, especially the genital area.
2. Thinking about sex, sexual fantasy and other elements of sex.
3. Attraction to the opposite sex is also a reason for sexual arousal.
4. When you start to kiss and touch the opposite sex, sexual arousal can begin.
5. Watching of pornography and other sex oriented movies can awaken your sexual desire and cause you to be aroused.

How To Overcome Sexual Arousal
- Understanding of what stimulates your senses, what awakens your sexual excitement or arousal is the first step to overcoming it. The moment you are able to do this, avoid all of such.
- Avoid an environment or media that will make you think about or look/watch sexual activities. This way your sexual desires will not be awakened. One of the most important precautions to take in order to control the sexual desires is to avoid places, images, views, media and anything that can provoke sexual desire in you.
- Do not feed your sexual appetite with things that will enhance its growth because the more you feed it, the more it grows.
- Talk about your arousal because often times than not most people end up having sex whenever they are aroused and inorder for you to avoid going into sex, You can talk about it with your partner that’s if the arousal has anything to do with him.
- Learn and practice self-awareness. Self-awareness is knowing yourself: what you like, what you don’t like, how you feel, what you’re good at, what you’re not good at.
- Avoid tempting situations and unusual closeness with your partner if that’s one of the reasons for your arousal.
