Harvard University professor, Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) wakes up in a hospital in Florence, Italy badly bleeding and unable to remember how he got there. A young doctor, Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones) informs him that he suffered a gunshot wound in an assassination attempt, and is suffering from amnesia as a result of a bullet wound to the head. Soon thereafter, a hitwoman, Vayentha (Ana Ularu) disguised as a police officer shows up and tries to finish the job. Sienna helps Langdon escape, and together they flee to her apartment.
The Chase Begins
Together, they piece together Professor Langdon’s memories and figure out that billionaire geneticist, Bertrand Zobrist (Ben Foster) before his suicide-death had created a virus which he named Inferno because of its capacity to reduce the world’s population by half. They fear it may have fallen into the wrong hands. But hot on their heels is Vayentha and the World Health Organisation, who try to raid the apartment, forcing them to flee again.
Another Enemy Comes Knocking
Vayentha reports to her employer Harry Sims (Irrfan Khan), the CEO of a private security company called The Consortium, who is acting on behalf of Zobrist. The W.H.O. agents are headed by Elizabeth Sinskey (Sidse Babett Knudsen), an old lover of Professor Langdon, and are trying to prevent the release of the virus. But before his death, Bertrand Zobrist provided Sims with a video message about the virus, to be broadcast after it has been released. When Harry Sims finally watches it, he’s shocked by the content and decides to work with Sinskey to prevent the outbreak of the deadly virus.
However, Langdon and Sienna are contacted by Christoph Bouchard (Omar Sy), a man claiming to work for the W.H.O. He warns them that Sinskey is not who they think she is, and is only after the Inferno virus for her own profit. The three cooperate for a while until Langdon realises that Bouchard had lied about his identity and his intentions, thus exposed as an enemy, they flee and are all on their own once again.
The Real Enemy is Exposed – The Revelation Will Leave You In Shock!
Following clues and symbols, Langdon figures out that the virus is hidden in the Hagia Sophia, a basilica in Istanbul, Turkey. With that knowledge, Sienna abandons Langdon and reveals how she was Zobrist’s lover and how it was their plan to release the virus. After this event, Langdon is captured by Bouchard, but is rescued by Harry Sims. With the identity of the real enemy now exposed, he re-teams with Elizabeth Sinskey. Sims later reveals how he was hired by Sienna to kidnap Langdon after Zobrist died, and also how he was drugged to induce a memory loss.
The Grand Finale
They realise the virus is in a plastic bag hidden under water in the basilica’s cistern. Together, Langdon, Sims, and Sinskey race to locate and secure the bag while Sienna and her allies attempt to detonate an explosive that will rupture the bag and spread the virus. In the battle that ensues, Sims is killed by Sienna, and when confronted by Langdon, commits suicide in an attempt to release the virus.
But will her plan of spreading the virus and killing half the world’s population succeed? Will Professor Langdon survive this confrontation? Also, what will be the fate of Elizabeth Sinskey?
