There is a lot of Myth surrounding the learning ability of kids with CP, especially in Africa. The general belief here is that kids with CP always have a learning disability but that is absolutely false just like the brilliant kid Adebolu Adejobi clearly proved after scoring highest in the just-released 2021 West African Examination Council Exams in his Secondary school. He took that exam using facilities that are generally poor in Africa and without the need for special facilities that kids with disability are provided, yet he outshone his classmates that are in quote normal.

Imagine an African utopia where kids with special needs get all the educative support they need? Just like Adebolu said once, kids with special needs do not need pity or money because that will be charity what he said they need is EMPATHY! and that message has never left me. What these great kids need is an environment that will encourage them to be whatever they choose to be.

A Utopia for kids with special needs in Africa might be light years ahead but we can start today, to make a difference as teachers and parents to enable these awesome kids to get all the support they need. What can we do?

Educators, therapists, parents, and CP kids can collaborate to develop an educational plan. Setting up an individualized education program (IEP) or a 504 plan to assist children to realize their full potential is one example. Therapy, a school aide, and other services may be included in the plans. This plan will evolve as the youngster develops.

To help pupils in your classroom, do the following:

Keep the walkways clear. Make your classroom easy to navigate and free of impediments. Students may require additional assistance moving around or reaching objects.

Keep an eye on the seating arrangements and make changes if necessary. Children with cerebral palsy who are self-conscious of uncontrolled movements or other disabilities may choose to sit in the back or away from others. Attempt to place children near other kids who are willing to urge them to participate in extracurricular activities, Allow extra time if necessary. Some students may require more time to commute between classes, complete assignments or activities, or take examinations. They may also require additional bathroom breaks. Consult with the student and the parent to determine the best course of action.

Make a strategy for missed classes, assignments, and exams. Students with CP may miss class to attend doctor appointments or see the school nurse for medication. Determine how the student intends to make up for the lost time.

Disparities should be discussed and celebrated. Students with CP desire to fit in with the rest of the class. Others, however, who perceive them as “different,” may target them. Discuss and celebrate differences while focusing on the positive in children’s common interests. Be aware of bullying and maintain a zero-tolerance policy for it.

Prepare for medical situations by talking to your parents ahead of time. If a student with CP experiences a medical emergency or event, such as a seizure, know what to do and who to call.

You can help children with CP learn as much as possible by addressing their individual requirements and providing support as needed.
