HOW TO HELP STUDENTS APPROACH MATHEMATICS

Mathematics is seen as a tedious subject by many students, and this perception has been responsible for the poor academic performance of students across different locations. For a student’s performance in mathematics to improve, the student’s perception of the subject needs to change. Undoubtedly, the teacher is also responsible for making this happen.

Here are five ways to help students develop a healthy view of mathematics and approach it without fear

1) CONNECT MATH TO OTHER FIELDS OF LIFE

Showing the connection between mathematics and other learning subjects is a wonderful way of changing a student’s wrong perception of mathematics. As a teacher, try as much as possible to show the application of mathematics in other fields of life. A student will be more interested in mathematics, no matter how difficult it may seem, if he/she can see its application to his/her field of interest.

2) ENCOURAGE MATHS DISCUSSIONS

Students tend to shy away from discussions that pertain to mathematics because of the dread and fear they have about it. When teachers encourage discussions about mathematics, it helps dissolve the fear and make the student more confident to face Math problems.

3) PLAY MATH GAMES

Mathematics is more of an abstract subject (even though it has practical applications). For instance, playing games that involve some calculations and brain stimulation will empower the student to see and enjoy the fun in mathematics.

4) CREATE PRODUCTIVE CHALLENGES

As a teacher, once in a while create challenges (productive challenges) that will encourage the students to break out of their shells and attempt challenges.

Don’t forget to make it engaging.

5) BUILD EXCITEMENT & REWARD PROGRESS

Most students generally are not interested in mathematics because of their negative attitude about mathematics. The solution is to make mathematics exciting when teaching it.

In addition, rewarding even the slightest progress will encourage students to drop their poor attitudes, start doing better and eventually become good mathematics students.

As a teacher, you can make mathematics your students’ favorite subject. You can help them approach mathematics with a healthy mindset.
