The Rebellion That Started It All
In Kathmandu, Nepal, the sorcerer Kaecilius (Mad Mikkelsen), and his followers murder the librarian of Kamar-Taj, a secret compound where mystical texts are kept. They steal a ritual from a book belonging to The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), a sorcerer who was his teacher in the mystic arts. The Ancient One chases the rebels, but Kaecilius escapes into another dimension with the spell pages.
Dr. Strange Meets The Ancient One
Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a successful neurosurgeon loses the use of his hands in a car accident. After months of surgeries and attempts to heal him fail, he learns of Jonathan Pangborn (Benjamin Bratt), a paraplegic – one who loses the use of all their limbs – who miraculously gained the use of his limbs and seeks him out.
Upon meeting with him, Jonathan tells him to go to Kamar-Taj. There, Strange is welcomed by another sorcerer, Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who is training under the Ancient One who welcomes him. The Ancient One later shows Dr Strange her power, revealing many secrets to him. Dr. Strange begs her to teach him, but she’s reluctant to because of his arrogance and the fact that he reminds her of her rebel student, Kaecilius.
The Lesson Begins
The Ancient One finally agrees to tutor Dr. Strange, and soon begins his tutelage under the Ancient One and Mordo. He quickly learns from the ancient books in the library, now protected by Master Wong (Benedict Wong). He learns that the Earth is protected from other dimensions by a spell formed from three buildings called Sanctums – found in New York City, Hong Kong and London, which must be protected by the sorcerers, though Jonathan (the former paraplegic, remember?) chose to forgo this responsibility in favour of regaining the use of his limbs.
Dr. Strange advances quickly over several months, even secretly reading from the text Kaecilius stole from, learning to bend time with the mystical Eye of Agamotto, one of the famous Infinity Stones. Mordo and Master Wong warn Strange against breaking the laws of nature with his new knowledge, reminding him of Kaecilius.
Kaecilius and His Followers Attack
Meanwhile, Kaecilius and his followers use the stolen spell to summon the powerful Dormammu of the Dark Dimension where time doesn’t exist and all can live forever. This destroys the London Sanctum, while Dr. Strange and Mordo hurry to protect the New York Sanctum. Kaecilius’ followers then attack there, but Dr. Strange holds them off with the mystical Cloak of Levitation until the Ancient One arrives.

Kaecilius mortally wounds the Ancient One, and escapes to Hong Kong. With her dying breath, the Ancient One tells Dr. Strange that he would have to break the rules to act as a balance to Mordo’s steadfast nature. Dr. Strange and Mordo arrive in Hong Kong to find Master Wong dead and the Sanctum destroyed, with the Dark Dimension already engulfing Earth.
Left with no choice, Dr. Strange uses the Eye of Agamotto to turn back time and save Master Wong, before creating an eternal time loop inside the Dark Dimension to trap himself and Dormammu in the same moment forever which he will only break if the demonic creature agrees to leave Earth forever and take Kaecilius and pals with him.

But will these evil creatures agree to this? What will become of Dr. Strange? Will he also decide to reject the mystical guardianship of Earth and selfishly just use his power to restore his hands?
