Jack Reacher Is Back With a Bang
After dismantling a human trafficking ring, former military police officer, Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) returns to his old military headquarters to meet Major Susan Turner (Colbie Smulders), who has been assisting him in his investigations, only to learn from his old rival, Colonel Sam Morgan (Holt McCallany), that she has been accused of espionage and detained.
Turner’s attorney, Colonel Bob Moorcroft (Robert Catrini), reveals that there is evidence that Turner is involved in the murder of two soldiers in Afghanistan, but Jack believes she is being framed. Moorcroft also reveals an old acquaintance of Jack, Candace Dayton (Sabrina Gennarino), is claiming he’s the biological father of her 15-year-old daughter, Samantha Dayton (Danika Yarosh). But Moorcroft is later killed by an assassin known as “The Hunter” (Patrick Heusinger).
Jack Rescues Susan
Jack reaches out to Samantha, but she avoids him, believing he’s after her biological mother due to her past as a drug addict. Jack is later framed for Moorcroft’s murder and detained alongside Susan. While in custody, assassins arrive to kill them, but Jack neutralises them, rescues Turner, and together they escape to Sam Morgan’s house to extract information, having reached the conclusion that he’s involved in the conspiracy. But “The Hunter” is hot on their heels, after they leave, the Hunter kills Morgan and frames Jack – for the second time!
…and Samantha Too
Still on the run, Jack and Susan uncover information that reveals Samantha is in danger and arrive at her home to find her foster parents dead and Samantha hiding in the kitchen. Upon learning from a friend, Sergeant Leach (Madalyn Horcher), that he’s also been framed for Sam Morgan’s death, Jack decides to escort Samantha to a private school for protection but there’s a hitch – Samantha has had her mobile phone with her all the while, so it’s highly likely the enemy knows exactly where they are. They discard the phone and make a quick exit, during which Samantha steals a backpack from one of the students to use the credit cards.
The Escape To New Orleans
Jack, Susan, and Samantha travel to New Orleans in search of Daniel Prudhomme (Austin Hebert), the only eyewitness to the murders that Susan has been framed for. They find him in a run-down warehouse filled with drug addicts where they learn that Prudhomme is connected to Parasource – a private military organisation that will do anything to cover up the murders.
Jack contacts Susan’s friend, Captain Anthony Espin (Aldis Hodge), to move Prudhomme into custody, but they are ambushed by assassins and Prudhomme is killed, Jack is able to rescue Anthony Espin, and they find out that the assassins are Parasource contractors. Not able to get them, Parasource’s CEO, General James Harkness (Robert Knepper), then sends his enforcer, “The Hunter”, to capture Samantha after her location was tracked when she uses a credit card to order room service.
The Lies Exposed
Jack and Susan, along with Espin, acting on information provided by Prudhomme before he was killed, intercept a flight of weapons due to leave the country, where they confront James Harkness and his men. There, they discover that some weapons crates has been filled with opium, thus exposing Harkness’ illegal deal of selling weapons to rebels and smuggling drugs into the United States. In fact, Harkness had framed Susan for the murder of those soldiers because she had been investigating his activities. Espin and his men then arrest Harkness, clearing Jack and Susan’s names in the process.
“The Hunter” Becomes the Hunted
Meanwhile, “The Hunter” and his men are still hot in the pursuit of Samantha, they chased her through the streets in a bid to lure Jack into a confrontation. Susan succeeds in killing one of the assassins, while Jack takes out another one on the rooftop. “The Hunter” captures Samantha and threatens to kill her, but she manages to escape and steals his gun. Reacher then tackles “The Hunter” on another rooftop where a bloody and vicious fight ensues, resulting in Hunter’s arm, leg and neck being broken by Jack before he is dropped off the rooftop to his final death.
Following Harkness’ arrest, Susan is reinstated to her old position and goes back to her office, where her colleagues and Captain Espin all welcome her back. Jack later meets Samantha at a diner so he could meet her mother, Candice. But there’s one test Candice must pass before he would believe her – Jack must recognise her at first glance, because he remembers everyone he’s ever slept with.
So, will Candice pass the test? Will Samantha truly prove to be Jack’s daughter?
