MOVIE REVIEW: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

In 1879, a corrupt industrialist, Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard) attacks the mining town of Rose Creek and slaughters some of the residents led by Matthew Cullen (Matt Bomer) when they attempt to stand up to him. Matthew’s wife, Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett), and her friend, Teddy Q (Luke Grimes) ride to the nearest town in search of someone who can help them. There, they meet warrant officer, Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), who initially declines their proposal until he learns of the identity of this ruthless man.

The Magnificent 7 – Their Identity Revealed

To help him, Chisolm sets out to recruit a group of gunslingers – 6 in all. Among them is gambler, Josh Faraday (Chris Pratt); sharpshooter, Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke); knife-wielding assassin, Billy Rocks (Byung-hun Lee); skilled tracker, Jack Horne (Vincent DÓnofrio); Comanche warrior, Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier) and notorious Mexican outlaw Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo).

The First Showdown

Arriving in Rose Creek, the seven engage in a gunfight with Bogue’s right-hand man, McCann (Cam Gigandet) and his men, driving them way with a warning never to return to Rose Creek ever again. But the Magnificent Seven know better, they know Bogue and his forces will return in a week, so the seven along with the town leader, Matthew Cullen train the townspeople to defend their homes. But one of the seven, Goodnight Robicheaux is haunted by the horrors he experienced during the American Civil War, and fearing the killings he knows will happen decides to leave. When he abandons the group, Matthew Cullen replaces him.

The Second and Final Face-off

Bogue arrives with his forces and attacks the town, but the bandits are ambushed by the townspeople, leading to a shootout. It is at this point that Robicheaux rejoins the group. Bogue then unveils his secret weapon, a Gatling gun, with which he kills numerous innocents. Realising that they are outgunned, the Seven drive the townspeople away and mount their last stand against Bogue’s forces. Jack Horne is killed by Bogue’s Comanche assassin Denali (Jonathan Joss), who in turn is later killed by Red Harvest.

Robicheaux and Billy Rocks are killed by a second round of gunfire, even as Josh Faraday sacrifices himself to destroy the Gatling gun and the rest of Bogue’s men when he rode up to them in a final charge and then detonated a stick of dynamite right next to the gun. Seeing that his forces had been defeated, Bogue flees into town, where he is confronted by Chisolm who disarms and wounds him. As Chisolm is strangling Bogue, he reveals how together with his men, they raped and murdered his mother and sisters during a raid several years earlier and further goes on to explain how he escaped being hanged.

But all this talk is just to distract Chisolm, and just as Bogue reaches for a hidden gun in his boot, Cullen shoots him to death!

After all is done, Faraday, Robicheaux, Rocks and Horne are buried in the town of Rose Creek, and honoured by the people as heroes. The surviving ones of the Seven – Chisolm, Vasquez and Red Harvest ride off, with Cullen remarking that their heroism have made them legends.

It’s certainly going to be a fun day when you get around to watching it!
