The movie is about, Red (Jason Sudeikis), a red bird who doesn’t fit in and has anger issues. He is a clown whose job is to entertain newly hatched birds on their hatch day. After failing his latest client because of his temper, they take him to court, where the honourable Judge Peckinpah (Keegan-Michael Key) sentences Red to anger management class.
The class is taught by Matilda (Maya Rudolph) who was an angry bird herself; and involves yoga, poetry-writing and Talking About Feelings. Among the birds in the class are Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride), a gentle black bird who tends to literally explode whenever he gets surprised or upset, and Terence (Sean Penn), a giant red bird who only growls.

One day, while taking the class, Red and the other birds are informed by Stella (Kate McKinnon) of a ship that has arrived on the island. Out of it steps a large, overweight, bearded green pig, Leonard, and his smaller assistant, Ross (Tony Hale) who bring with them delicious food (wine, candy and all sorts), and distracting entertainment ( like line-dancing, disco, trampolines) as well as two other pigs, even after Leonard had claimed it was only the two of them.
Red is the only one who doubts the pigs’ intentions, and tries to warn his fellow birds that the pigs’ visit to Bird Island— the New World, as the pigs call it — might pose a danger, but they all ignore him. They simply keep eating, dancing and having maximum fun.
Red, suspicious of Leonard, decides to search his boat alongside Chuck and Bomb. They find many pigs on the ship, and reveal this information to the birds, but Judge Peckinpah is more concerned that he searched the boat than about the discovery, even as Leonard lied again that it was supposed to be a surprise for the birds. He calls these pigs his cousins, and together they set up a cowboy show.
Hurry, There’s an Egg Theft!

The pigs eventually adjust to society, but Red is till suspicious, as he observed that more pigs were still coming. He gets Chuck and Bomb to help him find Mighty Eagle – a giant eagle, said to be the protector of the island, and the only bird that can fly (all the others are flightless).

After searching for a few days, they find his Lake of Wisdom on top of Bird Mountain. Red attempts to tell Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) of his suspicions about the pigs, but Mighty Eagle is actually a lazy, boastful retired bird, who hasn’t flown in years, and spends his free time dancing to disco music and spying on bathing female birds!
Red and his friends would later discover that the pigs were planting explosives around the island, and through Mighty’s binoculars, saw them stealing the birds’ eggs while the residents are being distracted at a party.
Red, Chuck and Bomb to the Rescue

Upon this discovery, Red and Bomb attempt to retrieve the eggs while Chuck runs to alert the rest of the island’s residents about the theft-in-progress. Red and Bomb are unable to stop the pigs, as they successfully leave in their boat, and everyone is sorry that they had not listened to Red.
Red rallies them to let their anger loose for once, and set sail for Piggy Island in order to retrieve the stolen eggs. They construct a boat from the supplies left behind by the pigs, set sail, and eventually land on Piggy Island – a fortified castle with giant walls, where Leonard is king of the pigs, and known as King Mudbeard, whose intention is to boil the eggs in a huge boiler!

Before the duo can save the eggs, they are picked up in a giant net. Red makes it onto the net and climbs to the egg pile, while Bomb and Chuck are locked outside. Chuck and Bomb manage to enter the room, Mighty Eagle flies in, having seen the conflict from Bird Island through his binoculars and feeling guilty, decided to help.
He tries to carry the eggs out, but Leonard holds onto Red’s leg, even as he hangs onto the net. It starts to tear and a blue egg falls out, back into the castle. Deciding to risk his life, Red lets go of the nest to save the egg from Leonard and eventually floods the castle with the boiling liquid the pigs planned on using to cook the eggs. Red outsmarts Leonard and takes back the egg, even as Leonard got blown up in the castle basement where there was a stockpile of explosives.

Red survives the explosion, but the other birds think he died in the explosion. He would later emerge with the egg – which has hatched into three blue birds – and is hailed a hero. Upon reaching Bird Island, Red realises that the birds have rebuilt his house as a sign of gratitude and he decides that it would be better if he allowed himself become part of a community, instead of being against it.
