Kainji Dam is a dam across the Niger River in Niger State of western Nigeria. Construction of the dam was carried out by Impregilo (a consortium of Italian Civil Engineering Contractors) to designs by Joint Consultants, Balfour Beatty and Nedeco, and began in 1964 to be completed in 1968.

1. Kainji Dam extends for about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi), including its saddle dam, which closes off a tributary valley.

2. Kanji Dam is one of the longest dams in the world.

3. Kainji Dam is the oldest, still functional power plant in Nigeria, it is about 47 years old.

4. Kainji Dam is the first Dam to be built in Nigeria.

5. The dam was designed to have a generating capacity of 960 Megawatts; however, only 8 of its 12 turbines have been installed, reducing the capacity to 760 Megawatts.

6. The dam generates electricity for all the large cities in Nigeria. Some of the electricity is sold to the neighbouring country of Niger
