Setting Realistic Goals as Students: What does it Really Mean?

There is a science behind goal-setting and that science works with one law which is that when you set goals, you subconsciously invest yourself into achieving such goals. Your brain believes that obtaining this goal is an essential part of who you are; hence the subconscious [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][total] investment of your time and effort. In other words, when you do not set up any goals, you have nothing to achieve. Your mind will not work towards actualizing any set objectives and as such you remain goalless and inevitably less successful. Therefore, as students there is need to continuously set academic goals which will ultimately drive you towards obtaining the grades you desire.

Unfortunately, most students make a major mistake when setting their academic goals by thinking that knowing what they want to achieve is enough. Well the truth is that knowing what you want isn’t enough as it will not motivate you to reach your destination. Instead, you must be able and ready to work out your goals and make them come into fruition. A well set out goal without proper implementation is a complete waste of time; quote me.

Ensure to sets SMART goals

The SMART goal model has been widely used by some of the most successful students from across the world. It is so helpful such that it helps guide you to understand how to outline your goals and implement them properly. Note that each component of the acronym is indeed beneficial to you. Endeavour to celebrate your achievements

Acknowledging small wins along the way will boost your confidence and enable you to believe that your SMART goals are achievable. Spending time seeking a massive breakthrough can cause your focus to shift and you may undervalue other aspects which contribute to your education.

Word of warning; don’t confuse celebrations with time-wasting activities. Rather than couch surfing for the rest of the day, take a moment to acknowledge the item you have just checked off your list. Allow yourself to indulge in a treat or go see a movie but remember to keep your eye on the prize and don’t let your hard work slip.

Motivate yourself

Let’s face the fact- studying can be hard work. Most of you will rather be doing other fun stuff other than studying. But then you must study hard and smartly; and that is why you need to keep yourself motivated. Let motivation be the reason why you study while your goals are the driving force behind it. Therefore, find what motivates you to keep your study goals in focus until you actualize them.

You should indeed create a study plan

Ask any good teacher the key to exam success and the majority will say a good study plan. Many students fail to outline the process to achieving their study goals in this way or find it difficult to stick to their plan. Creating a personal timetable uses your SMART study goals to build a realistic and motivational plan outlining how to achieve those goals.
