Our Take On Sokoto State’s Right To Education Bill

We are very impressed with the many good news about Education of recent. From news about the Rivers State Government that has promised to intensify investment efforts towards fostering development in the Education Sector and ensuring holistic youth development to the Wife of the Vice President of Nigeria calling for safer learning conditions for Nigerian teens, it seems like the future is indeed bright for Nigerian students! And now, Sokoto State in North-Western Nigeria is putting together an Education Rights Bill that will ensure that everyone within its borders has access to Education. This is swell!

Here is everything you need to know about the proposed Education Rights Bill: when passed into law, it will be the first of its kind in all the 36 states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; including the Federal Capital Territory. It was proposed by Waziri Aminu Tambuwal, the immediate past Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives and the current Governor of Soko State.

Suleiman Usman, who is Sokoto State’s Commissioner for Justice said the initiative is in consonance with the Laws of the Federal Republic. While addressing News Agents, he cited a section of the Nigerian Constitution that stipulates the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy which lists citizens’ right to education among other things as duties which Government must observe and apply.

Therefore, the proposed bill will ensure that illiteracy (which is prevalent among local dwellers in Sokoto State) is eradicated along with its attendant poverty. As a matter of fact, the importance of this bill cannot be overemphasized. Sokoto State is clearly one of Nigerias educationally-backward states. As a matter of fact, one of its Local Government Areas- Gudu Local Government Area- had no single Secondary School until Governor Tambuwal established one last year. Yes…it is that bad; reason why the proposed bill is more than welcome.

It is a well-known fact that Education opens the doors to success to many especially those shackled by poverty. We are indeed optimistic that this bill (if successfully implemented), will help uplift so many Soko indigenes out of poverty. And most especially, we hope that many more states in the region will take note of this giant stride in the right direct and emulate it.

Join us as we rejoice over this development even as we also hope that all the resources needed for a successful implementation of this grand project is made available. May be people be educated and may literacy be the order of the day! Kudos to the Sokoto State Government!
