Where there is no vision, the people perish. A man without vision ends up in commotion. In short, have a mission and a goal for your academics and life.
Set a target that at this age I should be through with my academics, then I proceed to the labor market!
When many high school students are asked why they are at the science/commercial/art department of their class, they are dumb, they cannot talk, and you are still at luck because Bolaji O Femi has something to tell you about choosing departments.
He wrote:
The best time to start planning about your future is immediately you get into high school
Know your interest
You will be introduced with various subjects, some may be very difficult, some very interesting, some easy to understand, some challenging and some make you to sleep in class, when faced with this contradictions, don’t panic, they are dues to knowing what you best fit in, that is if you are not lazy or giving flimsy excuses.
Do you find abstract subjects like mathematics easy, then you will best fit in science or some special social science department and face subjects like physics, chemistry, further mathematics or accounting, business mathematics…, you may then end up studying any science or social science related courses of your interest like engineering, medicine, economics, accounting…
Or you like reading, writing, or prudent when using or speaking language, then you will best fit in humanity/arts or some social science department and confront subjects like government, literature, commerce, geography, you may probably end up studying courses like law, mass communication, public administration, political science..
Some teachers also help in arousing and building the interest of student due to their style of teaching, the love and concern they show to the students and dedication to their progress, in most cases when you fall in love with your teacher you fall in love with his/her subject and may dream to doing something related to such subjects in future.
Parents can easily influence their children on the work they do, it may be due to family gifts or love/seriousness the parents show to their profession or the economic gain that comes from it, some serious children become their parents apprentice and learn at a early stage and become schooled and eventually skilled in such profession.
Apart from this, many aspire saying “I want to be a doctor”, but when enquired of the reasons, they are still dumb-founded, here is another solution to that, still Bolaji O Femi, and he said you need to consider this before choosing a career.
Am I quiet or talkative? Am I friendly or reserved? How do the personality relate to my dream
Am I academically sound for the course?
Will I be happy doing this job?
What are my chances of getting a job when I graduate?
Is money more important to me than interest in the job?
Do I have enough money to finance my school fees?
How risky is my job especially for ladies? Therefore, constructive and sincere question should be considered and answered before pursing your career, so if you are that person that chose his course because your friend is studying it or because you like it, you are on the wrong part 7
Choosing a course career is supposedly determined spiritually after efficient praying and also according to performance in school subject, so beware, it is not what you like but what you perform best in.
If perfectly read, gallantry would be attributed to any student that would re-consider and take to all these laid down success proven-principles. That ends it up for this chapter.
I hope your notebook is now filled, and you have highlighted those words or sentences or paragraphs that seem vital, or especially applicable to you.
Don’t forget that your notebook will be the foundation on which you can build your new life.
