Tattoos are hip. Everyone is wearing it. Whether musicians, actors, sports stars or the average Joe on the street. It seems everyone is gaga for tattoos. And they come in different shades, colours, symbols, numerals, letters, animals and what-have-you. You must have seen the huge lion on Ed Sheeran’s chest, or the trailing stars down Rihanna’s neck and wondered: “If I could just get something like that.”
But just because others are doing it does not justify your doing so, and before you go accusing me of sermonising, consider some of these reasons.
1. You Have Health Issues
There may be some allergies which you have and are not even aware of, perhaps you are diabetic in which case the wounds wont heal fast, leaving you open to infections. There was the case of Eric Rachesky who died after he got a tattoo, because he had a heart condition which required him to get regular antibiotic injections, this he failed to do before visiting the tattoo parlour. What about Daniel Hindley, also suffering from a heart defect, who got poisoned to death by his own blood after he got a lip piercing!
2. You Want The Name Of Someone You’re in a Relationship With
Name tattoos are a risky choice when it’s someone you’re involved with. Relationships end, and if it does, you’re still stuck with a permanent reminder of a failed union. “I will just have it removed” is your quick reply. Not to worry, we will get to that one in time.
3. You Don’t Understand the Language or the Meaning of the Symbol
Perhaps you are thinking of some cool Chinese characters because they look pretty and are the rage. Also, you may have based your decision to go with it on the advise of some tricky person who told you the characters mean something good. You should also know that there are websites dedicated toward making fun of people who got tattooed in a foreign language they couldn’t read, because the translation was clearly not what the person was going for. It happens all the time – don’t let it happen to you!
4. You Think That If You Change Your Mind, You Can Just Have It Removed
It’s usually more difficult, and painful to get tattoos off than it is to get them on. And someone even compared it to getting married with the mindset that you can just get divorced if it doesn’t work out. Now, that’s just faulty thinking! If you are not in it for better and for worse, then don’t even think about it at all!
5. You Want Something Cheap
The tattoos you see on your fave celebrities, and drool over will probably cost you an arm and a leg. Yes, professional tattoo artists don’t come cheap! This is where you begin to consider the option of going for a cheaper one, but not only may you end up very disappointed with the results, you could jeopardise your health when you come down with serious infections because you trusted the wrong guy – yes, that dodgy tattoo artist whose qualifications are questionable and sneaky at best.
6. It Is Very Addictive
I am sure you must have heard this before. They say that if you get one, you just want to get another, and another. Do you still wonder why tattoo lovers just never seem to have any uninked patch on their skin? It’s never enough! It is something every tattoo lover has confessed to. Now, addiction of any sort – even for ink and body art – is not such a nice thing to want to indulge in. Just imagine that you are the inky version of the neighbourhood drunk who always soils himself, and makes the gutters his bed every night. Yes, that’s the power of addiction! It doesn’t make you free, it turns you into a slave!
Do you agree?
