What To Do When Your Best Friends Are Fighting

Hint: Everyone fights sometimes – even best friends. If you’ve ever been friends with two or more people, there is most likely going to be something that is going to pop the big, pink lovable friendship bubble. A disagreement, a tiff, a she said/he said moment… it might even reach WWIII territory at times. Do not be alarmed if your friends sometimes get into it, it’s completely normal and it will usually work itself out with a quick “I’m sorry”.

However, what if your friends get into a HUGE fight and things get ugly fast? I’m talking about BFF bashing, when friends start to talk badly about each other because they are upset. The behind the back comments start off slow: “Ugh I can’t believe she said that!” or “he’s so wrong and you know it!” But before you know it, the harmless words start to become mean: “I lied when she asked if I liked her skirt…” and “Her crush doesn’t even like her.” Next thing you know, you are stuck in the middle and have no clue how to stop the bashing and get your friends back to happier times. If you’ve ever been in this situation, then here are seven ways to deal when your friends start to bash each other.

Stop The Bashing

Once people get upset the bashing starts. Let each side know that you do not want to hear their negative comments about the other. You are friends with both sides and it’s not cool. If they can’t stop, remove yourself and tell them you will talk to them again when they calm down.

Remain Neutral

Don’t pick a side, it will only make the situation worse. Try your hardest to stay in the middle and just listen to each of your friends. Sometimes a situation has a clear right and wrong side, but usually it is a personality clash or a battle of opinions. Keep your opinions to yourself and try to calm the situation down.

Don’t Fuel The Fire

DO NOT tell each side what the other side is saying. Each side is confiding in you, don’t break their trust by babbling to the other one.

Get To The Root Of The Problem

Ask each of your friends the real problem at hand. Why are they upset? Is it what the other said? Is it what the other did? There is always a main problem, weed out the noise and get to the bottom of it.

Schedule A Meeting

Try to get both sides together face to face. Talking in person is always better than through texts or on the phone. Let them know that you would like everyone to sit down and talk through the issue.

Come Up With A Solution

Whether someone owes someone an apology, everyone agrees to disagree and move on, whatever the solution is, make sure there is clear end to the fight.

Move On

Before everyone leaves make sure that the problem is put to rest and that there will be no more bashing or behind the back talking. You guys are friends! Act like it and move on.
