6 Tips To Help You Deal With Regret Over a Bad Experience

There are times when you do things you just absolutely regret. Reviewing the incident in hindsight will often have you berate yourself with such words: “How could I have been so stupid?” “Why couldn’t I have just acted with better insight?” “I wish I had shown more foresight and given it more thought.”

We have all been there, and that you feel this way is evident that you realise your error, which is the first step towards correcting it. And while feeling remorse over a badly handled situation is good, here are 6 reasons why you shouldn’t berate yourself over-much.

1. Don’t Beat Yourself Up

The inclination is to blame yourself. Try not to do this – awkward, embarrassing situations happen to everyone from time to time, so it’s not like you are the only one to whom this has ever happened. Plus, beating yourself up about it isn’t going to make it go away – accepting that it happened and learning from it will help you move on.

2. Figure Out Why You Feel Bad About It

At the same time, you should try to evaluate what’s making you feel so bad right now. Identifying what’s making you feel so crappy now can help you prevent it from happening in the future.

3. Talk It Out With Some Friends

Calling up a friend (or two, or three) will also help you move on. Usually, verbalizing the event makes it feel less awkward, and hopefully your friends will be able to make you laugh about it (and potentially share their own bad experiences).

4. But Don’t Feel Obligated To Tell Anyone
If you would rather not tell anyone about it, it’s your call. You aren’t bound to tell anyone anything about it. But it’s much better to tell at least one person what happened, just so it isn’t running on a loop in your mind over and over, and the weight of it is also lessened.
But if you think the best way to deal with it is by acting like it never happened, once again, that’s your call.

5. Get Outside

Just get out out of the house. You know how when you are feeling tired of being indoors, getting some fresh air makes you feel better? The same logic applies. Take a walk, visit friends, whatever – just get out.

6. Remember That Life Goes On

You feel bad right now, I know, but you will be okay. This is just a small blip of regret in the sea of otherwise awesome things that will happen in your life, and soon, it will be like it never even happened. Just ensure that you profit from it by actually learning from the experience.
