Manner is the prevailing customs, ways of living and habits of a person. Manner is a term usually preceded by the adverb word, good or bad to indicate whether or not a behavior is socially acceptable. By one’s manner, a good or bad impression can be made on others to either feel good or bad about you. Your manner reflects how people treat or accept you. Very acceptable, is good manners which refers to polite, humble, courteous, respectful and well cultured social behavior. Above everything, a man, woman, boy or girl is esteemed and distinguished on account of his/her good behavior in addition to his intelligence level. It is not totally on account of his intelligence level. It is no wonder, our colleges and universities, graduates students after being found worthy in ‘character and in learning’. You notice that it is first, character which explains good manners and then, learning.

Importance of Good Manners

A well-mannered person is respected, esteemed and distinguished wherever he goes and esteemed in whatever condition of life he may be. The age long adage of ‘a good name is better silver and gold’ summarizes this essence. When you are in a position of leadership having a good reputation and the respect of those you are leading is essential to your success. A well-mannered person is sure to attract everyone’s attraction and liking. Good manners cost nothing, on the other hand they pay us a lot.

  • Say, thank you, when you receive anything from someone
  • Say, please, when requesting for something
  • Say, excuse me, to get attention for something
  • Compliment others for their good qualities.
  • Always knock the door before entering another’s room
  • Be respectful towards your elders and tutors
  • Be compassionate towards someone who is in pain.
  • Listen attentively when someone is talking to you. You will one day talk to someone or a group and expect them to listen attentively also.
  • Be courageous enough to accept your mistake and never hesitate to say I’m sorry.
  • Always be ready to help others around you.
  • Always seek permission before touching something or using something that belongs to someone else
  • It is good manners to look neat and presentable. Be the way you want to be addressed.
  • If someone asks you a question, try to respond with a smile. You win people to you. That’s the power of a smile.
  • Do not interrupt in between the sentence when someone is speaking. Instead, wait for your turn.
