Snapchat Bullying Lands Teen in Jail

A teenager in the United Kingdom has been sentenced to up to 12 months behind bars after he was caught blackmailing two 14-year-olds, threatening them into sending photos of themselves on Snapchat. Police ended up finding 362 “inappropriate” pictures and 36 videos after searching his home.

The 17-year-old, who is unnamed because he is a minor, was convicted of blackmailing two 14-year-olds earlier this year. He threatened to hack a 14-year-old boy’s social media accounts if he didn’t send photos. That boy blocked him on Snapchat and other social networks, then the 17-year-old threatened to post the nude photos online if he didn’t unblock him. The blackmailer tried to get the boy’s family and friends to get him to unblock him on Snapchat, but that ended up getting him caught.

‘I want girls to think before they share nude images’: Teen whose naked photos appeared online goes public to raise awareness

Overall, 12 students  were contacted, but only two were explicitly blackmailed. He reportedly threatened to hack another 14-year-old’s Xbox account if he didn’t get explicit photos. The teenager will spend 12 months behind bars and five years under a sexual harm prevention order, which usually involves being added to a sex offender registry and being ordered to stay away from children.
This goes to show the importance of protecting yourself online, and not sharing pictures of yourself with just anyone.
