The Quick and Super-Easy Way to Convert Temperatures Between ºF and ºC

In this age of modern communication, you may hear a weather forecaster on an international news channel give temperature predictions in the Fahrenheit scale, which sends your mind in a loop because you aren’t used to it. Perhaps, you want a quick and easy way to convert between the temperature scales for your school work, or you are just plain curious. Whatever your reasons, you are on the right page.

Fahrenheit and Celsius are two common temperature scales, most often used for reporting room temperature, weather, and water temperature. The Fahrenheit scale is used in the United States, while the Celsius scale is used worldwide. And there is a super-easy way to convert between Fahrenheit (°F) and Celsius (°C) scales:

1. Fahrenheit To Celsius Conversion Formula

C = 5/9 (F-32)

where C is the temperature in Celsius and F is the temperature in Fahrenheit

Subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature

Multiply this number by 5

Divide this number by 9

The answer will be the temperature in degrees Celsius.

For example, let’s say you want to convert normal human body temperature (98.6°F) to Celsius. Plug the Fahrenheit temperature into the formula:

C = 5/9 (F – 32)
C = 5/9 (98.6 – 32)
C = 5/9 (66.6)
C = 37°C

To make sure your answer makes sense, a Celsius value is always lower than the corresponding Fahrenheit value.

2. Celsius To Fahrenheit Conversion Formula

Do a quick change of subject of formula:

C = 5/9 (F – 32)

9C/5 = F – 32

9C/5 + 32 = F

F = 1.8 + 32 (because 9/5 = 1.8)

It is easy to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit with these two steps.

Multiply your Celsius temperature by 1.8.

Add 32 to this number.

Your answer will be the temperature in degree Fahrenheit.

For example, perhaps you want to convert the temperature of the freezing point of water (0ºC) to Celsius. Plug the Celsius temperature into the formula:

F = 1.8 (0) + 32

F = 0 + 32

F = 32ºF

Just always remember that temperatures on the Fahrenheit scale are ALWAYS higher in value than those on the Celsius scale.
