What to Do When You Have No Friends?

Good friends, someone observed are a glass of something cold and sweet on a hot day. Just like that glass of pure bliss, you wonder what your life was like without them, and where they have been all your life. This is all fine and grand, but what if you don’t have any – not even one?

Is it just rotten misfortune? Or something you are not doing quite right? Let’s consider some suggestions about what you can do to change that.

1. Notice if there is anyone new in school who may not have lots of friends yet, and ask what they miss about their old school and like about this one.

2. Say Hi to at least four persons each day and try starting a conversation by saying “That test was hard, didn’t you think?” or “Want a piece of gum?” or “Did you hear that…?” You could also mention something admirable about them that you noticed, ensure that you are sincere though.

3. Join an extra-curricular or after-school event, this will enable you meet even more people than you are limited to in class or school.

4. Call someone at home and ask about homework. This is cheaper now with Whatsapp and Facetime calls. Talking on the phone can be easier than in person, and you can even scribble a few conversation topics down ahead of time.

It takes courage, but if you are friendly (not clingy), and if you get to know people and let them know you, you will make friends. Keep noticing those who seem happy to talk with you, versus the ones who act like they are doing you a favour; the ones who make you laugh, versus the ones who make you feel stupid. Also, don’t hang around the stuck-up crowd—even if they are considered popular.
