There are three categories of parents: The ones who really don’t care that much. Setting rules is not in their dictionary. The ones who set rules but still let you use your discretion sometimes. And then, the over-protective kind of parents.
Overprotective parents are always trying so hard to do the right thing. They just want you to live a life free of any pain, struggle, or mistakes! (That’s doable, right?) However, some parents don’t realise that making occasional wrong decisions actually can help teens learn and grow stronger.
Parents’ love of rules and regulations can give us (teens) serious cabin fever. Fact is teens need a little room to breathe! Not being able to make any of your own decisions can send any sane child into an angry rage-filled tantrum. If you are blessed with overprotective parents, you’re going to relate to these struggles:
1. You can’t have a discussion with your parents on changing things. The rules are the rules. Guess what? Your opinion is inconsequential. So, just save your energy and do all they say
2. You are forced to become a good liar. You gotta do what you gotta do to survive, huh?
3. And you get very creative in your deceit. Thanks to your parents
4. Don’t even think of dating. You’d be dead if they got to know.
5. Your parents are constantly checking in with you while you’re out. Like you’ve got a tracker on you.
6. Your curfew is the earliest of all your friends. When your squad is having a great time, you’ll always be the first person to run home
7. Sometimes your friends don’t invite you out because YOU CAN’T GO ANYWAYS.
8. Your friends are actually pretty scared of your parents. They really are terrifying
9. It makes sense that you feel a sense of relief when your parents are out of the house.
10. You feel a lot of pressure to be perfect. Your parents have put all this time and energy into you – you better be a good return on their investment!
11. Which will inevitably lead you to having a breakdown. . . How am I supposed to live by this standard?
12. And most times, cause you to rebel against all their rules when you’re alone.
13. But, hey, they are doing all that because they care so much about you. So make good choices
