Week 1 – Animal Nutrition
Overview – Nutrition is a characteristic of living things that describes their ability to feed. When animals are not properly fed, they become malnourished and begin to show signs of nutritional deficiency. Nutritional deficiency occurs when a ration does not supply all the essential nutrients in the right proportion and quantities. Week 2 – Agricultural Extension
Overview – Agricultural extension is a process whereby modern farming techniques and research findings are taken to the farmers through extension workers and problems of the farmers are taken to research institutions for solutions. This week, we shall learn about agricultural extension – its objectives, roles and problems it’s facing. Week 3 & 4 – Farm Fishing
Overview – Also known as pisciculture, farm farming is a form of aquaculture that involves raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures, usually for food. This week, we shall learn about farm fishing. We shall also learn about the conditions necessary for siting a fond pond, maintenance, and classification of fishes – bony and cartilaginous fishes. Week 5 & 6 – Animal Improvement
Overview – Animal Improvement is defined as the methods that are done in order to develop and breed only animals that show the greatest merit under consideration such as good feed conversion, growth rate, disease resistance and egg size. One of the aims of animal improvement is to produce animals that can give high yields or products in form of meat, egg and milk. Breeding is a process that involves the development of animals by transferring inherited qualities from parents to offspring via mating. Types of breeding include – inbreeding, line breeding and cross-breeding. This week, we shall learn about what animal improvement entails and we shall also learn about breeding. Overview – The term agricultural financing refers to the act of acquiring and using capital in agriculture. It helps farmers acquire more farm inputs for increased production and increase farm yield. Week 10 – Agricultural Insurance
Overview – Insurance is a term used to describe the act of protecting one’s properties or self from financial loss. Agricultural insurance is the insurance policy which provides compensation to farmers for losses suffered. For example, a farmer can ensure his crops from natural disasters such as floods, drought, etc. Insurance helps assist the farmers in accessing new opportunities by improving their ability to borrow either in cash or kind as credit facilities. Farmers can suffer risks such as personal or human risk, price risk and so on. To reduce the impact or effect of the risks, it is advised that a farmer gets himself insured.
