What Should You Talk About On A First Date?

Whether it’s a first date, meeting new people, a job interview or anything else, the key to success is to always be yourself. You want people to like you for who you are, and if you’re insincere, it will eventually come out and cause all sorts of drama. Along with this, you want to be comfortable, and putting on some type of act will add stress to your date.

For teens, you can start off with really easy conversation topics like something funny that happened in school, the overwhelming amount of homework you already have, or one of your friends failed Ice Bucket Challenges. If that doesn’t work, just talk about the action down on the field. If the conversation stalls and you really want to make him/her feel overly in control, ask him/her to explain what’s is unique to either gender. i.e., ask him to tell you about football if you’re a lady, or you could ask her to tell you about her favourite Nigerian movie stars if you’re a guy.

It’s likely that after a few minutes of awkward chit-chat, you’ll find yourself in a somewhat normal conversation as the two of you get to know one another. Maybe instead of planning what you can say, come up with some questions that you want to ask him/her.

In terms of how you should act, again, just act naturally. There’s really no reason to laugh overly hard at things s/he says (though it does help to relieve the nervousness) or exaggerate your stories. Especially if you’re a lady, remember he asked you out, so you’ve got the advantage in that he is clearly already interested in you. Just show him why you’re as awesome as you are.

Now if you’re a girl, I am going to go ahead and give you some advice: if he starts getting a bit too touchy-feely with you on the date, just go ahead and give him a smack in the bean bag.

Many high school guys try and flex the “cool factor” of their age or having a car to take advantage of younger girls; so remember that you don’t “owe” him anything. If the situation gets uncomfortable for you, just get up and leave.

Regardless, one of the most exciting parts of growing up is dating, and after a few nerve-wracking first dates, you’ll get used to that awkward feeling. If all else fails and you’re sitting there in silence, ask him/her what he thinks of the new Dorobucci video video, and draw your own conclusions.
