SS2 First Term Biology Lesson Note

Below are the 2022 complete SS2 First Term Biology Lesson Note

Week 1 – The cell

Overview – Discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665, the cell is known as the basic unit of life. It is the structural and functional unit of life. In 1839, Matthias Jakob Schleiden and Theodor Schwann developed the cell theory. According to the theory, all organisms are made up of one or more cells and cells come from preexisting cells. Organisms are classified into two with reference to the number of cells an organism possesses – unicellular and multicellular. This week, we shall learn about the cell and the scientists that contributed to the discovery of cells. To learn more, Click here…

Week 2 – The cell structure

Overview – Cells are not just the functional units of living organisms, they are also the structural units of cells. The cells are made up of two major parts, the cytoplasm and nucleus. Each of these parts has several components that play a relevant role in the cell. This week, we shall learn about the several components of the cell, their functions and the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells. We shall also learn about cell theory. Week 3 – The cell and its environment

Overview – The cell and its environment refers to the functioning of the cells at a particular condition in a given environment. This week, we shall learn about the cell and its environment. We shall learn about the processes of diffusion and osmosis. Diffusion is the movement of molecules of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration until they are evenly distributed. Osmosis is the flow of solvent molecules from a region of the dilute solution to a region of concentrated solution through a selectively differential permeable membrane. We shall also learn about other processes such as turgidity, flaccidity, plasmolysis and haemolysis. To learn more, Click here…

Week 4 – Properties and functions of the cell

Overview – A major characteristic of living things is nutrition. Nutrition is the ability to feed. This week, we shall learn about autotrophic and heterotrophic nutrition and their various types. We shall also learn about macro-nutrients (e.g. nitrogen, calcium, sulphur, etc.), micro-nutrients (copper zinc, nickel, boron, etc.) and anabolism. To learn more, Click here…

Week 5 – Cellular respiration

Overview – Respiration is another important characteristic of living things and all cells respire. Cellular respiration refers to the biochemical pathway by which cells release energy from the chemical bonds of food molecules and provide that energy for the essential processes of life. Cellular respiration is divided into anaerobic and aerobic reactions. Aerobic reactions involve the use of oxygen and anaerobic reactions do not involve the use of oxygen. This week, we shall learn about cellular respiration and some major pathways such as Kreb’s cycle, glycolysis, electron transport phosphorylation, etc. To learn more, Click here…

SS2 First Term Biology Lesson Note

Week 6 – Growth

Overview – The characteristic of living things, growth is an anabolic process is a permanent increase in size and complexity of an organism during development from embryo to maturity, due to cell division. Cell division is a process that involves meiosis and mitosis. Meiosis and mitosis occur in several steps, interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase. This week, we shall learn about growth in living organisms – cell division, enlargement and differentiation as well as the regulation of growth by hormones. To learn more, Click here …

Week 7 – Irritability/cell reactions to its environment

Overview – Also known as sensitivity, irritability is the ability of a cell to respond to stimuli. The stimulus which is plural for stimuli refers to changes that occur in a cell’s environment which can affect its activities. In the case of plants, depending on what cause the change, the plants elicit different responses. This week, we shall learn about irritability, the types of response, how environmental factors evoke response, cyclosis and organelles for movement. To learn more, Click here…

Week 8 – Reproduction

Overview – Reproduction refers to the creation of a new individual from previously existing individuals. They must be of the same species. There are two types of reproduction – asexual and sexual reproduction. Asexual reproduction comes in various forms but the most common are binary fission and budding. This week, we shall learn about the characteristic of living things called reproduction. We shall learn about the types of reproduction and the various forms of asexual reproduction. To learn more, Click here…

SS2 First Term Biology Lesson Note

Week 9 – Sexual reproduction

Overview – Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of a male and female gamete to form a zygote which later develops to a young one. This simplest form of sexual reproduction called conjugation which occur some lower organisms such as Mucor, Rhizopus, Paramecium and Spirogyra. This week, we shall learn about sexual reproduction, conjugation and fusion of gametes. We shall also learn about meiosis and the structure and functions of the male and female gametes. To learn more, Click here…

Week 10 – Reproductive health

Overview – The term “Health” refers to the state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Reproductive health on the other hand is the complete well-being of the reproductive system and its processes. This week, we shall learn about reductive health, harmful traditional incisions and types of harmful traditional incisions. We shall also learn about other things such as the importance of pre-natal care, breastfeeding and the effects of STIs and HIV and AIDS on foetus and infants. To learn more, Click here…

Week 11 – Revision

Overview – This week, there will be a revision on all the topics covered this term, from learning about the cell to reproductive health.

Week 12 – Examination

Overview – We shall be examined on all we have learnt this term.

Week 13 – Examination

Overview – This week, we shall be examined on all we have learnt this term.
