Workbench Fittings and Its Appliances

A bench on which work is performed, especially such a bench for mechanics, machinists, carpenters, etc.

In other word, a workbench is a table used by wood workers to hold work pieces while they are worked by other tools. There are many styles of woodworking benches, each reflecting the type of work to be done. Most benches have two features in common: they are heavy and rigid enough to keep still while the wood is being worked, and there is some method for holding the work in place at a comfortable position and height so that the worker is free to use both hands on the tools. The main thing that distinguishes benches is the way in which the work is held in place.

  • Portable workbench

The portable workbench is the most popular as it is simple to use and folds for easy storage.

Many portable workbenches are fitted with a footrest that can be used to stabilise the bench by apply downward pressure with the foot.

Workbench Appliances

Because the bench does not have a permanent vise, it helps to have other equipment to perform various tasks.  These can also be referred to as sawing appliances or planing appliances but they are generally used on the workbench.

  • Bench hook: It is a simple device, one long wide board with a small cleat on each end.  it is used mainly to hold work while cross cutting off the end
  • Shooting board : It is used to square the edge of the board. It  can also be used to plane end grain
  • Miter Shooting Board : This is used like a regular shooting board except the center stop has a 45 degree angle to each face, allowing you to shoot either direction.
  • Miter box: A basic miter box can be made with three pieces of wood
