I was just as utterly surprised, and speechless when I came upon the article myself on technobuffalo.com. The article has these fantastic(!) things to say about the bed, and what you should expect in case of an earthquake ( you never can tell, Haiti is a pretty decent example of the possibility of the “most unlikely” happening)
I have never been in an earthquake, but I have heard you are supposed to stand in a door frame when one starts. But what about when you can’t get to a door? How can you possibly stay protected while you are sleeping, for example? How about a bed that swallows you – yes, literally swallows you – to keep you protected from the building that is collapsing around you?
That’s what this video proposes, and it actually seems pretty serious, like it might actually work. There are various beds, one that pulls you right into it, one that creates a sort of tent above you, and a couple of other designs. The idea is that, when the building presumably comes crashing down, you are protected in a metal cube of sorts, complete with water, food and medical supplies to tide you over while rescue is on the way (this is what makes it the stuff of legends!).
I dig the idea (totally!!), I’m just terribly afraid that this would accidentally activate itself – swallowing me in the middle of a regular Tuesday night (perhaps, because it got a false earthquake alarm!!). See some more pictures.
Do spare a little time to watch the amazing and exactly 2 minutes video
