Meaning of National Security

National Security can be defined as the structures and processes put in place by a government to protect the country and its citizens from either external  or internal attacks.

The efforts put in place by the security agencies to prevent or stop internal  or external attacks constitutes a national security.

Security means safety; to keep from danger or harm , to hide from destruction, to protect from thieves etc.

Security agencies in Nigeria

Agencies of National Security

Because if the various activities of criminals and evil people in the country, the Federal Government has established some agencies to take charge of the security and check perpetrators of evil acts. These agencies are:

  1. Nigeria Immigration Service: Nigeria Immigration Service issues the standard Nigerian Passports. It controls the movement of people across the national borders. It also checks illegal migration in and out of the country.
  2. Nigeria Police: The Nigeria police are charged with the responsibilities of arresting,prosecutes offenders and criminals.
  3. Nigerian Customs: The custom check cross-border smuggling, supervise imports and exports and generate revenue for the government by collecting customs and excise duties.
  4. Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC): The NSCDC assists the police in community policing, they arrest offenders and assist in prosecuting them.
  5. Nigerian Armed Forces: This comprises of Army, soldiers, Nigerian Navy, they work together to ensure peace and harmony in the country.
  6. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA): The NDLEA is responsible for searching and arrest carriers and users of dangerous drugs.

Consequences of Poor security

  • Abuse of the rule of law
  • Slow developmental growth
  • A state of Anarchy
  • A sharp decline in productivity
  • Inter-tribal wars may arise
  • Fear, anxiety, unhappiness and confusion will arise

Roles of Citizens in National Security

  • Citizens must keep to law and order
  • All citizens must be patriotic
  • Every citizens must be vigilance
  • They must be ready to provide necessary information to the security agencies when the need arise
