She was the apple of her parents’ eyes and her name was Ajoke. Conceived after so many years of waiting patiently, the countless rumours of her mother’s barrenness and the endless troubles caused by her paternal grandma, she was a healthy beautiful child who soon blossomed into a teenager. But then Ajoke had one major flaw- she was utterly insolent to everyone.
Being born with a silver spoon meant that the girl had everything she ever wanted. She was pampered by her parents, her aunties and uncles and the many helps who were at her beck and call. Every school day, her specially assigned driver Olu drove her to and fro the very expensive school she attended. Some of her mates used to be jealous of her because whereas they followed the school bus every day, Ajoke was chaperoned with a luxury car.
Indeed her life was enviable. But then her special privileges somehow made her insolent. She looked down on everybody, spoke to her driver with disdain and was always quick to point out to some of her mates the differences between her house address and theirs. One day, Ajoke was involved in an argument with one of her teachers and she did not hesitate to tell the woman that each of her parents could earn in a month more than what she (the teacher) could ever earn in a year. The teacher reported the insult to the school management but no punishment was meted at the girl. The girl was important and her parents’ continued patronage was needed, the teacher was told.
The girl was off her hinges with pride. And the worst part of it all was that nobody corrected her. Her parents did not bother with pointing out her bad manners because as long as they were concerned, their little angel could do no wrong. The teachers at school were scared of her just as the helps at home were too. But all that changed the day Ajoke’s driver decided he had had enough. The school had just closed for the day and Olu did not show up on time to take Ajoke home. And as a result she was furious so much so that by the time the driver did show up, the fourteen year old girl raged at him with insults. She did not care to listen to how he was held up in traffic. Instead, she barraged him with insults, telling him how useless he was and how his incompetence was the reason for his impoverished life. When Olu made attempt to remind the little girl about the age difference between them and why she should not speak to him the girl she did, he looked at him disgustedly and spat him in the face, telling him to do his worst. And so he did!
