Letter writing occurs in many forms and formats, including notes, letters, and postcards.
Types of letter that will be discuss here are:
- Formal letter
- Informal letter
1. A formal letter
A formal letter is an official letter. Any communication that is considered to be official enough to be explicitly written or typed in a letter can be called a formal letter.

Features / Format of a Formal letter
Contact details: addresses at the top, email and phone number at the start or end of the letter (optional)
Date: when the letter was written, most formal letters will be archived and if there are several exchanges then it is important to keep order by dating each letter.
Salutations: both at the beginning and the end, need to be appropriate.
Main body: this is all up to the writer of the letter, how much detail you want to include, what details you want to include, what point you are putting across, if you want to include a suggestion or solution etc
Format of a formal letter
Full Block Style: everything is lined-up to the left hand margin, no indenting at all, single space except for between paragraphs, the most easiest format to use
Modified Block Style: includes centering certain parts of your letter (date and closing parts), single spacing
Semi-Block Style: least common format, includes indenting of paragraphs and centering like in modified block style, sometimes spacing is bigger
