A heavy stampede was observed on Wednesday at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) during fresh students screening, as a result of which numerous young people were left injured.
Today’s stampede occurred when the students attempted to force their way into the building, and the UNIBEN security closed the gate against them, an eyewitness named Osas said. Many of the students fell, while hundreds of others were stepping on those on the ground.
According to the information gathered by The Nation, scores of students have sustained injuries.
Speaking with The Nation correspondent at the place of the incident, one of the students, Osas said several students were rushed to the hospital, adding: “But am not sure anyone died, though many of them were seriously injured.”
However, UNIBEN’s Public Relations Officer, Barr. Harrison Osarenren, said there had been no casualties during the screening.
